What to Expect from a
Bespoke Consultation
— Step by Step
Your competition dress begins with a single conversation. Here is everything you need to know about our bespoke video consultation — and what happens from that first message to the moment your dress arrives at your door.
Get in Touch — Early
The first step is simply reaching out. You can contact us via the enquiry form on our website, or message us directly on Facebook or Instagram. At this point, all we need from you is a brief introduction: your competition date, the dance category (Latin, Ballroom, Juvenile, or other), your level, and any initial ideas you might already have about your dress.
We cannot stress this enough — the earlier you get in touch, the better. We aim to complete every bespoke dress within 4 to 10 weeks, and that window depends on our current workload. For major competitions, booking several months in advance gives us the space to do our very best work without any rush.
Your Video Consultation
This is the heart of the entire process — and it is conducted completely online via video call. We use WhatsApp, Google Meet, or any other platform you prefer. No travel required, wherever in the world you are.
The consultation typically lasts between 45 and 90 minutes. We use this time to get to know you as a dancer — your movement style, your competition goals, and what you love aesthetically. We will look at your reference images together, discuss colour against your skin tone, and explore fabric and embellishment options from our current collection of materials.
One important thing to know: we do not produce design sketches or technical drawings. Everything — every design decision, every detail — is agreed and decided together during the consultation itself. It is a live, collaborative conversation, not a presentation. By the end of the call, we both know exactly what your dress will look like.
Choosing Your Materials
During the video call, we will guide you through our selection of performance fabrics — stretch velvets, chiffons, georgettes, power mesh, and specialist dancewear textiles sourced for both their beauty and their behaviour on the floor. Colour, weight, and movement are all considered together.
We will also discuss stonework and embellishment — including crystals, beading, and decorative details. Every choice is made with your specific competition category in mind: how the dress will photograph under stage lighting, how it will read from the judges' table, and how it will move with your body through every step.
Every detail — every seam, every stone, every hem — is made with one person in mind. The dancer who will wear it.
— Renata, Head Dressmaker · Janus FashionVideo Measurements at Home
With over 34 years of tailoring experience, Renata has perfected the art of taking accurate measurements remotely. During your video consultation, she will guide you step by step through measuring yourself at home — explaining exactly where to place the tape, how to hold your posture, and which positions capture the measurements she needs for a precise pattern.
This process works. Our remote clients across 40+ countries receive dresses that fit as well as those made for local clients who visit the studio. The key is the guided consultation — it is not a form you fill in alone, it is a live session with our dressmaker watching and directing.
For clients based near Stevenston, North Ayrshire, an in-person studio fitting is also available during production — giving you the option to see the dress on your body before it is fully finished.
Quote, Deposit & Handcraft
After your consultation, we confirm the full specification of your dress in writing — the design, materials, measurements, and a clear timeline. We then provide a final price. A deposit of 50% is required to begin production; this confirms your commission, allows us to purchase materials, and secures your place in our schedule.
Your dress then passes entirely into the hands of Renata, our head dressmaker, who has been creating competition gowns for over three decades. Throughout production, remote clients receive photos and progress updates so you can follow the process from wherever you are in the world.
Dispatch — Tracked & Insured
When your dress is complete and has passed our quality inspection, the remaining 50% balance is due. Your dress is then carefully packaged — we take particular care with stonework and structured elements — and dispatched via a fully tracked, insured service with a signature required on delivery.
We ship worldwide and have sent dresses to dancers in over 40 countries. Whether you are in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, or Australia, your dress will reach you safely and in perfect condition, ready for the floor.
The Earlier You Book, the Better.
Our bespoke service is intentionally personal — Renata works with a limited number of clients at any one time, which means the calendar fills up quickly, especially in the months before major competitions. If you have a competition date in mind, we always recommend reaching out as soon as you can.
There is no obligation in getting in touch. If you have a question, a vague idea, or a clear vision — we are happy to talk. The consultation itself is where everything comes to life.
