Prom Dress Alterations
Ayrshire — A Guide
for Parents
Prom night matters. The dress your daughter has chosen is probably hanging on the back of a door right now — and it almost certainly needs at least one alteration before the big evening. Here is everything you need to know about getting it right, from someone who has been working with formal wear in North Ayrshire for over three decades.
Why Almost Every Prom Dress Needs Altering
Off-the-rail prom dresses are designed to fit a standardised size, not a real person. Your daughter is not a standard size — no one is. The waist, bust, and hips rarely all fall into the same size bracket, and prom styles in particular — strapless bodices, corseted backs, floor-length skirts — are genuinely unforgiving when the proportions are not exactly right.
Buying a dress a size up and having it taken in is often the right approach. The alternative — buying to fit the largest measurement and hoping the rest will work out — rarely produces the result anyone hopes for.
This is not a failing on anyone's part. It is simply how garments are made, and it is exactly why alterations specialists exist.
The Most Common Alterations
After years of fitting prom and formal dresses across the UK, the same requests come up again and again. Here are the alterations most young women need before prom night:
Hemming — taking up the length so the dress sits correctly with the chosen heel height. Always bring your prom shoes to the fitting.
Taking in the waist or bodice — removing excess fabric at the back or side seams to create a smooth, secure fit through the torso.
Adjusting straps or adding bust support — repositioning straps, adding boning, or fitting bra cups into the bodice for strapless styles.
Letting out or reshaping the hips — if the dress is tight across the hip area, seams can often be let out to allow comfortable movement.
Repairing or replacing zips — cheap fastenings are one of the most common faults in mass-produced formal wear. Replacing a zip before the event is far preferable to discovering it is faulty on the night.
Adding bustle loops — for longer trained styles, allowing the skirt to be looped up for dancing.
A dress that fits properly does not just look better — it feels secure, and when a young woman feels secure in her dress, she enjoys the night for what it actually is.

The single most common mistake parents make is leaving alterations too late. Prom season in Ayrshire typically runs from May through June, and good seamstresses book up weeks in advance during that period.
8–10 weeks before prom — Purchase the dress. If ordering online or from a shop that needs to source your size, allow extra time for delivery.
6–8 weeks before prom — First fitting appointment. Bring the dress, your heels, and any shapewear that will be worn on the night.
3–4 weeks before prom — Second fitting if required. Checks that the work is correct and allows for any final adjustments.
1–2 weeks before prom — Collection. Try the finished dress on at home in full — heels, hair up if that is the plan — to confirm everything sits correctly.
Alteration Costs — A Realistic Guide
Prices vary depending on the complexity of the work, the fabric involved, and the seamstress. The following are general ranges for Ayrshire in 2025–2026, covering the most common prom dress alterations.
A plain floor-length hem typically runs from £25 – £60. A hem with multiple layers or tulle — where each layer must be cut and finished separately — can reach £40 – £100 or more.
Taking in the waist or bodice usually costs £30 – £55. Hip adjustments run from £25 – £50 depending on construction. Strap work from £15 – £35, zip replacement from £20 – £45, and adding bra cups or boning to a strapless bodice from £25 – £60.
Most prom dresses require two or three alterations combined. Budgeting £60 – £120 is sensible for the majority of dresses, though heavily layered or boned gowns can exceed that.
What to Bring to the Fitting
The dress — on a hanger, in as clean a condition as possible.
The shoes — the exact pair that will be worn on prom night. Heel height is essential for accurate hemming.
Shapewear and underwear — any bodysuit, strapless bra, or shapewear that will be worn underneath on the night.
Hair considered — if your daughter plans to wear her hair up, pinning it for the fitting affects how the neckline and back of the dress sit.
Movement in mind — let the seamstress know how much dancing is expected. It affects how hem length and adjustments are approached.
What to Look for in an Alterations Specialist
Not all seamstresses work with formal wear. Experience with structured bodices, corset backs, and layered skirts is a different skill set to everyday clothing repairs — and it matters with prom dresses.
Look for someone who will explain the work involved and give a clear quote before beginning. Confirm they can work within your timeline before committing, especially in May when diaries fill quickly.
At Janus Fashion in Stevenston, we offer professional alteration appointments for all types of formal wear — not only our own dresses. Our head dressmaker Renata has over 34 years of experience working with structured gowns and delicate fabrics, and we welcome clients from across North Ayrshire for prom dress fittings by appointment.
A Few Things Worth Knowing in Advance
Alterations cannot work miracles with sizing. A dress two or three sizes too small is not salvageable. Order to fit the largest measurement and have the smaller areas taken in.
Very cheap dresses can be expensive to alter. Poor construction and fused seams can make alterations more time-consuming — and costly — than expected.
Do not wash the dress before alterations. Some fabrics shrink or change. Wait until the work is complete and the seamstress confirms it is safe to clean.
Budget for alterations when you budget for the dress. A realistic total includes both the purchase price and approximately £60–£120 for alterations work.
Bring the dress to the appointment with her. The fitting must be done on the person who will wear it.
The dress should feel like it belongs to her — not like something she is managing all evening. That is what a proper fitting achieves.

The right dress, altered to fit perfectly, is something a young woman will remember. The difference between a dress that almost fits and one that genuinely does is felt from the moment she puts it on.
Start early, plan ahead, and find a seamstress you trust — the rest takes care of itself.
